Ripple <a class="ticker-link" data-ticker="XRP" data-exchange="CRYPTO" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/XRP-USD" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/xrp/usd">XRP</a>)</a> on Tuesday launched the Ripple Treasury, which integrates GTreasury&#8217;s enterprise software and enables 3-5 second cross-border settlements using RLUSD <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/RLUSD-USD" target="_blank" class="ticker-link" data-ticker="RLUSD" data-exchange="CRYPTO" rel="noopener">(CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/">RLUSD</a>)</a> stablecoin versus traditional 3-5 day wire transfers.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What Ripple Treasury Actually Does</h3>



The platform <a href="https://www.gtreasury.com/posts/introducing-ripple-treasury-powered-by-gtreasury-the-future-of-cfo-operations-is-here">combines</a> traditional cash management with digital asset operations in a single system, solving a major problem for corporate finance teams: managing both regular money and crypto without spreadsheets.



Cross-border payments using RLUSD stablecoin settle in 3-5 seconds instead of 3-5 business days. 



That means companies can move money internationally without tying up capital for days waiting for banks to process transfers.



Ripple Treasury provides direct API integrations that treat digital asset platforms like &#8220;digital banks&#8221;—balances and transactions flow into existing workflows automatically.



The platform also connects to overnight repo markets and tokenized money market funds like BlackRock&#8217;s BUIDL, letting companies earn yield 24/7 instead of leaving cash idle when banks close at 5pm.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Acquisition Strategy</h3>



This is Ripple&#8217;s first major product integration since <a href="https://www.gtreasury.com/news/ripple-acquires-gtreasury">acquiring</a> Chicago-based GTreasury for $1 billion in October, which brought 40 years of enterprise treasury expertise.



The platform also leverages Hidden Road, the prime broker Ripple acquired for $1.25 billion last year, to provide access to repo markets.



Ripple is building an end-to-end institutional financial services stack: payments, custody, liquidity, and now treasury management.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ripple&#8217;s Regulated Expansion</h3>



The launch comes as Ripple aggressively expands its regulated footprint globally.



Earlier this month, Ripple received approval from the UK&#8217;s financial regulator for its Electronic Money Institution license.&nbsp;



The company also secured preliminary approval for an EMI license from Luxembourg&#8217;s financial regulator.



In the U.S., Ripple applied for a national banking license with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in July 2025, following similar applications from Circle <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/CRCL" target="_blank" class="ticker-link" data-ticker="CRCL" data-exchange="NYSE" rel="noopener">(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/CRCL">CRCL</a>)</a> and BitGo.

Daan Crypto Trades <a href="https://x.com/DaanCrypto/status/2016440008123506760">said</a> Bitcoin remains stuck within its broader range, with the yearly open acting as near-term support. Despite rallies in equities and metals, crypto continues to lag. His strategy: stay patient, set alerts near $84,000 and $94,000, and wait for a decisive break.

Arthur Hayes, Chief Investment Officer at&nbsp;Maelstrom&nbsp;Fund, explored in an essay published Tuesday how a potential intervention by U.S. authorities to support the Japanese yen could boost risk assets like Bitcoin <a class="ticker-link" data-ticker="BTC" data-exchange="CRYPTO" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/BTC-USD" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>)</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Intervention In US Interest?</h2>



In the <a href="https://cryptohayes.substack.com/p/woomph?r=gu0uw&amp;utm_medium=ios&amp;shareImageVariant=overlay&amp;triedRedirect=true">essay</a> titled "Woomph," Hayes argued that the Treasury Department, in coordination with the Federal Reserve, could sell dollars and buy yen, solving &#8220;many financial problems&#8221; for the Trump administration.



&#8220;This will strengthen the yen against the dollar, which will help U.S. export competitiveness,&#8221; Hayes said. 



He added that this would push Japanese Government Bond yields lower, discouraging private Japanese investors from selling U.S. Treasuries to buy Japan&#8217;s sovereign debt.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Good News For Bitcoin?</h2>



Hayes suggested that the Federal Reserve could expand its balance sheet by printing more money, referencing the &#8220;Money Printer Go Brrr&#8221; meme. The resulting monetary expansion, he added, would trigger a Bitcoin &#8220;pump.&#8221;



The pace of yen appreciation, however, should be &#8220;gradual.&#8221;



&#8220;It cannot appreciate too quickly, otherwise it would cause catastrophic losses for investors who borrowed yen to fund other asset purchases as volatility rose,&#8221; the co-founder of cryptocurrency exchange&nbsp;BitMEX&nbsp;said.



Hayes urged investors to proceed cautiously, saying he won&#8217;t increase his BTC holdings until the Fed&#8217;s balance sheet shows a week-over-week rise in &#8220;Foreign Currency Denominated Assets.&#8221;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Dollar-Yen Dynamics</h2>



Hayes&#8217; comments came amid<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/26/01/50135246/dollar-selloff-yen-intervention-usd-dxy"> &#8220;suspected&#8221; U.S. intervention in the yen market</a>. Reports suggested that&nbsp;the Federal Reserve Bank of New York began contacting banks to ask about their USD/JPY position sizes.



Interestingly, the U.S. Dollar Index and the Japanese Yen Currency Index&nbsp;diverged as these reports trickled in.



However, the reports suggested the Fed did not clearly communicate that it was acting solely on behalf of Japanese authorities.

Price Action: At the time of writing, BTC was exchanging hands at $89,097.07, up 0.48% over the last 24 hours, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/BTC-USD">data from Benzinga Pro</a>.



American Bitcoin shares fell 0.63% in after-hours trading after closing 5.30% higher at $1.590&nbsp;during Tuesday&#8217;s regular trading session.

Bitcoin lifted above $89,000, while Ethereum broke above $3,000 amid a broader market rally.

Nearly $300 million was liquidated from the market in the last 24 hours, <a href="https://www.coinglass.com/LongShortRatio">according </a>to Coinglass, with $230 million in levered short positions wiped out.



The uptick energized Bitcoin's derivatives market, with open interest surging 3.12% over the last 24 hours. Despite the rise, &#8220;Fear&#8221; sentiment prevailed in the market, <a href="https://alternative.me/crypto/fear-and-greed-index/#google_vignette">according </a>to the Crypto Fear &amp; Greed Index.

The global cryptocurrency market capitalization climbed back above $3 trillion, up 1.33% over the past 24 hours.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">S&amp;P 500, Gold Hit New Highs</h2>



Stocks extended their gains on Tuesday. The S&amp;P 500 lifted 0.41% to close at a record high of 6,978.60, while the tech-focused Nasdaq Composite rose 0.91% to close at 23,817.10.



The Dow Jones Industrial Average, however, slipped 408.99 points, or 0.83%, to end the session at 49,003.41.



Precious metals rebounded after Monday's crash, with gold increasing 1.80% to hit a new all-time high of $5,174 an ounce. Spot silver rallied 7.50% to $113.91 an ounce.



Investors will turn their attention to the<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/26/01/50172918/fed-meeting-preview-trump-powell-independence-political-risks-us-dollar-performance"> Fed's first policy decision</a> of the year on Wednesday. The CME FedWatch tool shows more than 97% odds that rates hold <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">steady </a>at 3.5%-3.75%.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Ethereum&#8217;s Turnaround Against Bitcoin Means</h2>



In a statement to Benzinga, Arthur Azizov, founder and investor of B2 Ventures, stated that Bitcoin, "first and foremost," is a risk asset that loses out to safer assets during times of "uncertainty."



"At that point, my base case is consolidation. I expect BTC to hold the $85,000–$88,000 zone. This area already worked as strong support several times in Nov-Dec 2025, and I doubt it breaks easily this time," the analyst projected.



Michael van de Poppe, a well-known cryptocurrency trader and analyst, highlighted Ethereum&#8217;s "quick&#8221; turnaround against Bitcoin on the ETH/BTC chart.



"That&#8217;s a strong signal, and I think that there&#8217;s more to come as it&#8217;s holding a crucial level of support," Van De Poppe added.

Trader Notes: Trader Crypto Seth <a href="https://x.com/seth_fin/status/2016213786508640765">explained</a> that crypto saw another sharp flush even as U.S. equities stayed strong. The S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq were green, highlighting a clear divergence from crypto markets.



Around 87,700 traders were liquidated, totalling roughly $200 million in forced liquidations, with Bitcoin sliding back to around $87,700.



Crypto trader KillaXBT <a href="https://x.com/KillaXBT/status/2016121441649918018">sees</a> Bitcoin has broken back below $90,000 after repeatedly failing to hold above it. 



Since there was no sustained acceptance over this level, the breakdown reinforces a bearish market structure. As long as BTC stays under $90,000, downside risk remains dominant.

Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin Hold The Line As FOMC Meeting Looms

Fundstrat&#8217;s Tom Lee says the metals rally is &#8220;sucking oxygen&#8221; out of Bitcoin <a class="ticker-link" data-ticker="BTC" data-exchange="CRYPTO" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/BTC-USD" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>)</a> and crypto markets, but predicts a surge for cryptocurrencies nonetheless.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why Crypto Isn&#8217;t Rallying Despite Bullish Fundamentals</h3>



Lee <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lO_DrBCFyFE">said</a> on CNBC on Monday that crypto prices are stuck despite improving fundamentals: it&#8217;s a simple case of money flowing to where the action is.



Gold crossed $5,000 and silver hit $110—the kind of massive moves that traders pile in to catch the momentum—money that would normally flow into crypto.



Many traders use borrowed money or options to amplify their bets. 



When they&#8217;re doing that in gold and silver, they&#8217;re tying up their capital and can&#8217;t use it to buy Bitcoin or Ethereum at the same time.



The problem is worse for crypto because the industry massively deleveraged after the October crash. 



Lee says that event &#8220;crippled many of the key players in industry, some exchanges and market makers,&#8221; leaving the sector &#8220;limping along&#8221; without the leverage that typically amplifies rallies.



So even though fundamentals have improved—Wall Street now views tokenization and blockchains as converging with traditional finance—prices aren&#8217;t keeping up because gold and silver have taken over.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Wall Street Is On Board With Crypto</h3>



Lee highlighted that Davos made clear Wall Street&#8217;s institutional adoption is accelerating.



UBS CEO, Standard Chartered CEO, Euroclear, and major Wall Street players now view traditional finance, tokenization, and blockchains as &#8220;one business that&#8217;s converging.&#8221;



That institutional backing provides fundamental support, but the price action won&#8217;t reflect it until capital flows shift back from precious metals.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">When Does Bitcoin Surge?</h3>



Lee&#8217;s thesis is straightforward: when gold and silver take a break, capital rotates back into crypto.



&#8220;When gold and silver take a break, in the past that would lead to a Bitcoin and Ethereum <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/ETH-USD" target="_blank" class="ticker-link" data-ticker="ETH" data-exchange="CRYPTO" rel="noopener">(CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/eth/usd">ETH</a>)</a> surge afterwards,&#8221; Lee said.



The weaker dollar and dovish Fed should be bullish for crypto, but the industry doesn&#8217;t have the leverage tailwind it normally would.&nbsp;



The parabolic move in silver—up 270% in 13 months—can&#8217;t last forever. Technical analyst Carter Worth recently called for selling &#8220;all of it,&#8221; noting parabolic moves typically mark the end, not the beginning.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Bigger Picture: Dollar Weakness And Fed Easing</h3>



Lee isn&#8217;t worried about precious metals strength hurting equities.&nbsp;



He views gold&#8217;s rally as anticipating dollar weakness and dovish central banks—both positive for asset prices.



A weaker dollar typically helps large multinational companies by boosting overseas revenue.&nbsp;



Combined with accelerating earnings growth from onshoring and tariff headwind disappearing, Lee sees upside to Fundstrat&#8217;s 7,700 S&amp;P 500 <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/SPY" target="_blank" class="ticker-link" data-ticker="SPY" data-exchange="ARCA" rel="noopener">(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/SPY">SPY</a>)</a> target by year-end.

A potential intervention by American officials in the market for Japanese yen may have ripple effects for Bitcoin <a class="ticker-link" data-ticker="BTC" data-exchange="CRYPTO" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/BTC-USD" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>)</a> and other cryptocurrencies, analysts note.



Crypto chart analyst Ali Martinez <a href="https://x.com/alicharts/status/2016054431318438246">pointed out</a> that U.S. involvement would likely mean selling dollars and buying yen, an unusual but powerful signal in foreign exchange markets. 



Historically, this kind of coordinated action has had far greater impact than Japan acting alone.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Unlikely Link Between Yen Moves And Bitcoin</h2>



Japan's urgency stems from a persistently weak yen, rising domestic bond yields, and the Bank of Japan's gradual shift toward tighter policy. 



That mix has global spillover effects.



Past episodes show that solo Japanese intervention tends to fade quickly, while joint action with the U.S. carries far more credibility and staying power.



In general, a weaker U.S. dollar benefits assets that thrive on currency dilution, Bitcoin included. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How U.S. Intervention Could Reshape Crypto Markets</h2>



Over the medium to long term, sustained dollar weakness would likely support BTC, especially given that Bitcoin still trades below levels many expected after years of global monetary expansion.



However, there is a key short-term risk. 



A sharp yen rally could force an unwind of the yen carry trade, triggering sudden selling across risk assets, including cryptocurrencies. 



A similar dynamic played out in mid-2024, when risk markets briefly sold off amid rapid foreign exchange moves.



Traders will be watching not just whether intervention happens, but how aggressive and coordinated the response turns out to be.

The Dollar-Yen Move Is The Overlooked Story Bitcoin Bulls Should Pay Attention To

Bitcoin <a class="ticker-link" data-ticker="BTC" data-exchange="CRYPTO" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/BTC-USD" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>)</a> remains range-bound around $88,000, but traders are bracing for potential volatility and downside risk.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bitcoin And FOMC: A Complicated Story</h2>



Historically, Bitcoin has reacted negatively around FOMC meetings with around 9% drop the last time. 



Crypto chart analyst Ali Martinez <a href="https://x.com/alicharts/status/2016181551969525897">noted</a> that in 2025, BTC fell after seven of eight Fed decisions.



A 15% spike in May 2025 was the exception.



With January 2026 rate-cut odds extremely low (~2.8%), policy easing appears unlikely, keeping downside risks elevated. 



FOMC weeks have consistently delivered higher volatility and post-announcement weakness, making caution essential.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">First FOMC Of 2026: What Traders Are Watching</h2>



Trader Andrew Crypto <a href="https://x.com/AndrewCryptoHQ/status/2016093106983059770">noted</a> that on lower timeframes, a liquidity sweeps into the FOMC around $85,000 followed by a bounce towards around $92,000 would not be surprising.



The closest heavy liquidity sits below price, roughly $84,800–$86,800 and remains untapped. 



While upside liquidity exists, it is much farther away, making downside the more immediate draw from a liquidity perspective.



Trader Niels <a href="https://x.com/Web3Niels/status/2016150649470148825">emphasized</a> that markets will react less to the rate decision itself and more to the Fed's tone. The key question is whether the Fed signals a March rate cut. 



Current odds of a 25 basis points cut remain extremely low at around 3%.

Solana's price faces two opposing forces: resistance around $135–$140 that repeatedly rejects rallies, and support at $118–$122 that continues to prevent deeper declines.



SOL has been grinding in this range for weeks with no clear winner yet.



SoSoValue ETF data <a href="https://sosovalue.com/assets/etf/us-sol-spot">shows</a> the Solana Spot ETF pulled in $2.46 million on Monday alone, bringing total cumulative inflows to $875.84M with $1.05B in total assets under management.



That represents 1.50% of Solana&#8217;s entire market cap now sitting in institutional hands through the ETF.&nbsp;



They&#8217;re buying the dip while retail is capitulating—a pattern that often precedes major reversals.



The price sits below all key moving averages: 20-day at $130.66, 50-day at $134.50, 100-day at $144.84, and 200-day at $156.84.&nbsp;



That&#8217;s full bearish alignment, meaning the trend is still down until proven otherwise.



Key levels: Breaking $135-140 triangle resistance confirms reversal and targets $156 (200 EMA), then $170-180. But losing $118 December low targets $110-115, with $108 breakdown opening catastrophic decline to $100.

XRP is stuck near the bottom of its price range after falling to December&#8217;s $1.72 low.



The big story is what&#8217;s happening behind the scenes in the <a href="https://www.coinglass.com/currencies/XRP/futures">derivatives</a> market.&nbsp;



Traders have $3.43 billion worth of open positions on XRP right now—that&#8217;s a massive amount of leverage that needs to unwind one way or another.



Binance data shows there are 3.13 times more traders betting XRP goes up than betting it goes down. That&#8217;s a heavily one-sided bet.



In the last 24 hours, liquidations wiped out $782,240 in long positions compared with just $368,840 in short liquidations.



That means more bears are getting forced to exit their trades, which typically happens when price is trying to move higher.



Key levels: Breaking $2.00-2.10 confirms reversal and targets $2.30-2.40 descending trendline, then $2.50-3.00. But losing $1.80 support targets $1.72 December low, with $1.70 breakdown opening decline to $1.50-1.60.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Cardano: Bulls Gaining Momentum Despite Downtrend</h3>

ADA has hit $0.34 multiple times over the past month and bounced every single time without breaking lower.&nbsp;



That&#8217;s exactly what happens when buyers are defending a level—they keep stepping in at the same price to prevent further drops.



Even better, each time ADA bounces off $0.34, it&#8217;s been making slightly higher lows. That&#8217;s the first sign of a potential turnaround after a big selloff.



The momentum indicators are also starting to shift. The bulls (measured by +DI at 22.97) are now stronger than the bears (measured by -DI at 12.83).&nbsp;



Moreover, the Supertrend at $0.4091 sits well above current price as resistance.



The problem is ADA is still stuck below $0.41, which has been acting as a ceiling. Until it breaks above $0.40-0.42, this is just a bottom formation.



Key levels: Breaking above $0.40-0.42 would signal the bottom is in and open the door to $0.47-0.50. But if $0.34 finally breaks after all these tests, it would likely trigger a drop to $0.32-0.30, with $0.30 giving way potentially sending it to $0.28 or lower.

Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan sees two massive catalysts building the next potential impulse move in crypto: the potential passage of the Clarity Act and the gold run past $5,000.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Gold&#8217;s Parabolic Move Signals Trust Crisis</h3>



Gold has <a href="https://experts.bitwiseinvestments.com/cio-memos/gold-rising-clarity-in-suspense">doubled</a> in just 20 months—a stunning move for an asset used as currency for over 2,000 years.



Hougan explains the surge comes from two forces: years of &#8220;money printing&#8221; finally catching up with fiat currencies, and governments losing trust in each other.



The trust breakdown started in 2022 when the U.S. seized Russia&#8217;s treasury assets after the Ukraine invasion.&nbsp;



That move sent a clear message to central banks worldwide: if you store wealth in someone else&#8217;s system, they can take it.



Central banks responded by doubling their annual gold purchases. They needed assets no one else controls.



That trend is now accelerating. 



Last week, German economists called for their government to pull gold stored at the New York Federal Reserve and bring it home, implying falling trust in the U.S. as custodian.



Similarly, a Norwegian government panel warned its massive sovereign wealth fund that foreign assets may face &#8220;increased taxation, regulatory intervention and even confiscation&#8221; in today&#8217;s geopolitical climate.



This is where crypto&#8217;s unique value becomes clear, according to Hougan.

Without it, a future administration could reverse today&#8217;s policies.



In early January, Polymarket placed passage odds at 80%. 



After Coinbase <a class="ticker-link" data-ticker="COIN" data-exchange="NASDAQ" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/COIN" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/COIN">COIN</a>)</a> CEO Brian Armstrong <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/crypto/cryptocurrency/26/01/49990874/coinbase-ceo-withdraws-support-for-clarity-act-why-it-could-be-bullish-for-crypto">called</a> the current version unworkable, odds dropped to roughly 50%.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Implications</h3>



If the Clarity Act passes, Hougan expects the market to rally sharply. 



Investors will assume stablecoin and tokenization growth is guaranteed and build that future into prices today, resulting in a bull market built on strong expectations and guaranteed regulatory clarity.



If Clarity fails, crypto enters a &#8220;show me&#8221; period with three years to prove it&#8217;s indispensable. 



Future growth becomes contingent on real-world adoption rather than legislative tailwinds. 



Hougan points to Uber and Airbnb as examples of technologies that operated on regulatory edges but became so popular lawmakers had to change rules. 



If crypto achieves similar penetration, positive legislation will follow regardless of who&#8217;s in charge.



The Clarity Act&#8217;s fate will likely be decided by end of Q1.

Trader Notes: Altcoin Sherpa <a href="https://x.com/AltcoinSherpa/status/2015928993430540444">said</a> PENGU is not an attractive short at current levels, as it's trading in a high-volume zone with relatively strong fundamentals.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">USA₮: Built For The GENIUS Act</h3>



Tether <a href="https://tether.io/news/tether-announces-the-launch-of-usat-the-federally-regulated-dollar-backed-stablecoin-made-in-america/">launched</a> USA₮ on Monday to comply with the GENIUS Act, the first nationwide framework governing stablecoins sold to U.S. users.



The law requires stablecoins offered to Americans to be issued by federally or state-qualified entities. That locked out USDT, Tether&#8217;s flagship token, forcing the company to create a separate U.S.-compliant version.



Bo Hines, former White House Crypto Council Executive Director, leads the project as CEO of Tether USA₮.



USA₮ is now available on Bybit, Crypto.com, Kraken, OKX, and MoonPay. Cantor Fitzgerald serves as reserve custodian, ensuring transparency from day one.



This move puts Tether back in direct competition with Circle&#8217;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/CRCL" target="_blank" class="ticker-link" data-ticker="CRCL" data-exchange="NYSE" rel="noopener">(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/CRCL">CRCL</a>)</a> USDC, which has dominated the U.S. institutional market due to early regulatory compliance.&nbsp;



Meanwhile, USDT continues operating globally with $143 billion in circulation.



Paolo Ardoino, Tether&#8217;s CEO, called USA₮ &#8220;a dollar-backed token made in America&#8221; designed for institutions that need federal oversight.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Standard Chartered: Stablecoins Are A &#8220;Real Threat&#8221;</h3>



The same day Tether launched USA₮, Standard Chartered <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/stablecoins-real-threat-us-bank-deposits-says-standard-chartered">published</a> a report warning that stablecoins pose a serious threat to bank deposits.



Geoff Kendrick, the bank&#8217;s global head of digital assets research, estimates U.S. bank deposits will shrink by one-third of the total stablecoin market cap—currently $301.4 billion.&nbsp;



That translates to roughly $100 billion leaving U.S. banks as stablecoins grow.



The problem is simple: when customers move money from banks into stablecoins, that money doesn&#8217;t come back as stablecoin issuers don&#8217;t redeposit the cash into the banking system.



Tether holds just 0.02% of reserves in bank deposits. Circle holds 14.5%. The rest sits in Treasury bills and other instruments outside the traditional banking system.



That means every dollar flowing into stablecoins is a dollar permanently leaving bank balance sheets—reducing deposits that banks use to make loans and generate revenue.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Regional Banks Face The Biggest Hit</h3>



Kendrick&#8217;s analysis shows regional banks are most exposed because they rely heavily on deposits for profitability.&nbsp;



He specifically flagged Huntington Bancshares, M&amp;T Bank, Truist Financial, and CFG Bank as facing the highest risk.



Larger investment banks are less exposed because they generate revenue from multiple sources beyond deposit-driven lending.



Looking ahead, Kendrick projects the stablecoin market will reach $2 trillion by end-2028.&nbsp;



At that scale, about $500 billion could leave developed-market banks, with another $1 trillion exiting emerging-market banks.



Circle <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/CRCL" target="_blank" class="ticker-link" data-ticker="CRCL" data-exchange="NASDAQ" rel="noopener">(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/CRCL">CRCL</a>)</a> CEO Jeremy Allaire has called fears of stablecoin-driven bank runs &#8220;totally absurd,&#8221; but Standard Chartered&#8217;s numbers suggest the threat is real for banks that depend on deposits.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What Happens Next</h3>



Tether&#8217;s USA₮ launch legitimizes stablecoins in the U.S. regulatory framework, potentially accelerating adoption among institutions previously blocked from using USDT.



For banks, the expansion of federally regulated stablecoins like USA₮ and USDC increases competitive pressure.&nbsp;



As stablecoins scale toward $2 trillion, regional banks face structural threats to deposit bases.



Standard Chartered expects the CLARITY Act to pass by the end of Q1 2026, which could limit stablecoin yields. But even without yields, stablecoins offer instant settlement and 24/7 availability—features traditional bank deposits can&#8217;t match.
